Mitten Homesteaders Conference Day 2 | Goat Butchery Demo

Nubian dairy goat featured at the Michigan Mitten Homesteading Conference.
Cuke, my steady-eddie Nubian milking doe.

We made it to day two of the @mittenhomesteaders conference and what a wonderful day it was. I am always so impressed with the work involved in putting on an event like this. The speakers were amazing, the vendors were plentiful, the weather was perfect, and the friendship and fellowship was entirely cup-filling.

I did a goat butchery demonstration for the first time this year. I was truly blown away by how many people came to watch and learn. Butchery/meat has historically gone hand in hand with dairy until our industrialized food system fragmented the whole thing.

On a homestead scale, responsible stewardship of your dairy goats (and staying within the carrying capacity of your land), looks like butchering some of the offspring, raised well on milk and pasture. It's an important cycle and I was honored (and initially super nervous), to teach on the topic today. Thank you to everyone who came, and who made this weekend a success. Looking forward to next year!
